APRIL 17TH, 2012

Not many titles coming out this week, but two of the titles that do hit shelves this week are huge. In fact, both big titles were on my Top 12 Films of 2011 List. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which was probably the best action film of last year hits DVD and Blu Ray today. The effects are amazing, the chase scenes are exquisite, and as long as they keep making sequels just as good if not better than the previous installments, I am all for the continuation of this series.

Shame is the second big title of the week starring 2011’s most ambitious actor, Michael Fassbender. Easily becoming a favorite of mine within the last year alone, Fassbender takes on a not-so-easy role as a sex addict. His sister in the film, Carey Mulligan, is gorgeous as always, and steals the show with a heartfelt singing number. Shame landed in my top 5 films of 2011 and I very much look forward to seeing this again.

Some of the smaller titles released today include The Divide, a dark film about an apocalyptic event that lands a dozen or so people locked in the basement of a building where they are left to fend off the outside world as well as themselves. With Milo Ventimiglia from the television series Heroes being the only major star in the film, The Divide comes off a little too much like the failure that was Quarantine.

I have been looking forward to the release of the film Garbo: The Spy, a documentary about a man named Joan Pujol Garcia, who was a real life double-agent during WWII, in which he was a spy for the Allies. Given the nickname Garbo, after Greta Garbo, the double-agent spent most of the war delivering false information and misleading facts to the Nazi army, but having never been found out, actually received honors from both sides of the war.
