THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN / A new trailer was released for the Marc Webb directed Spider-Man reboot just in time to play before The Avengers on Thursday night. The big draw here were some longer shots of the villain, The Lizard, played by Rhys Ifans, who I am becoming a huge fan of more and more. Ifans will handle this villain role perfectly, with enough experience and wherewithal to pull it off effectively. Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man will finally return to his smart-ass origins, something completely lacking in the Tobey Maguire version, with comments like “you found my weakness, small knives”.
The whole “untold story” of Peter Parker’s missing parent’s does not peak my interest. Spider-Man is my favorite superhero and muddying the water with an entirely new story fails to impress me. However, I am interested in seeing what they do with all the other characters like Gwen Stacy played by the always impressive Emma Stone and the hint from the trailer at a possible Norman Oswald/Green Goblin appearance.
The visuals of the film look amazing, especially the richness of the suit, which shimmers with detail every time it is present. The action sequences look great and the CGI looks to rival its predecessors. The first person views have me leery about overuse but I will have to wait to see how effective it is used and if it is really used as much as the trailers make it appear.
Overall, The Amazing Spider-Man is one of the top 5 films I am looked forward to this summer and I cannot wait to experience it.
Expect To See It: July 3rd, 2012
