MAY 15TH, 2012

Mark May 15th as a strong week for DVD releases. Not that anything released this week is groundbreaking, but with enough titles to keep just about any viewer happy, it’s hard to argue that this week beats most weeks for new releases.

Chronicle is the latest found footage film to be released, following three high schooler boys who discover supernatural abilities. Earning a modest $124,417,777 in worldwide box office, Chronicle is the most successful of the releases this week.

The Academy Award nominated Albert Nobbs was also released this week, earning acting nominations for both Glenn Close and Janet McTeer, as well as a nomination for make-up. Though the film did not win any awards, it is still worth viewing, with nice showings from Mia Wasikowska of Alice In Wonderland and Aaron Johnson of Kick Ass.

Katherine Heigl’s latest venture, One For The Money, may not be highly acclaimed (rated a 2% on Rotten Tomatoes), the woman is sexy as hell and at least deserves some credit for flaunting it appropriately. Not doing much better at 7% on Rotten Tomatoes is the horror genre’s next exorcism documentary, The Devil Inside, which attempts to blend the lines between fake and reality with what is passed off a “actual events”.

The two releases this week to keep your eye on are Rampart, starring Woody Harrelson, and The Grey, starring Liam Neeson. Harrelson takes on this rough cop drama about a Vietnam vet turned police officer who struggles with keeping his anger at check. Though nothing flashy, Harrelson’s performance was just shy of being nominated for an Oscar. In one of my favorite films of the year thus far, The Grey takes you into the heart of the Alaska, after a plane crashes on the way back from an oil-rig. Stranded and being hunted by wolves, Liam Neeson leads a group of men through impossible odds and dangerous wilderness. Though I have a feeling this film will not come across as jarring as in theaters, it was still a great film worth viewing.

Compared to a mild one or two major releases in a week, this week drops on six well-known titles, which may even out in quality, but are signs are reaching the busy season of title releases. Prior to this week, I had seen The Grey and Albert Nobbs earlier in the year, and with the rest of the films on my list to see this week, I am anticipating some well-rounded films, with Rampart and Chronicle topping my list.
