2013 Oscars Challenge: [5] Brave – One Nomination

BRAVE

If you look at the statistics of Pixar winning awards, the results are staggering. Pixar has earned 26 Academy Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, and eleven Grammy Awards, including six Best Animated Feature Awards (“Finding Nemo”, “The Incredibles”, “Ratatouille”, “WALL-E”, “Up”, and “Toy Story 3”). So to say “Brave” shouldn’t be at the top of your list for Best Animated Feature is ill-advised.

Despite the lack of response towards the film during this year’s critics awards, getting absolutely zero (that I know of) awards from any critics societies, “Brave” is teetering on many people’s list. But with last night’s Golden Globes win, hopefully people are starting to get their head’s straight. Yes, “Frankenweenie” and “ParaNorman” cleaned up at the critics awards this year, but they just don’t seem strong enough to win. “Brave”, on the other hand, is exactly what Pixar does best, a perfect children’s film that is gorgeous and mature enough for adults.

With only one animated film left to see (“Wreck-It Ralph”, which I have seen before), I am fairly confident in picking “Brave” as the Best Animated Feature.

REVIEW

Pixar captures the heart and humor of this fairy tale perfectly, offering uncountable memorable moments. Though not their greatest venture to date, Brave belongs in the top tier of their arsenal, with the most stunning visuals in their repertoire, a suitable score, and impressive voice acting. Portraying intense emotional reactions in animated characters has become Pixar’s staple, in turn causing great emotional responses in their audiences and by making those connects, Brave becomes much more than an animated film and I see bright futures for this film in the award seasons to come.
