Oscars Watch: 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Award Nominees

In this year’s Oscar race, the question isn’t between two films vying for the win like most years, although “Gravity” versus “12 Years A Slave” seems to be the big two, it’s whether or not you believe “The Butler” should be recognized. Supposedly snubbed by the Golden Globes nominations, SAG went the other route and is choosing to recognize Forest Whittaker and Oprah Winfrey in their roles, which was quite a surprise, seeing as “The Butler” buzz had all but fallen off. The Best Actress category could easily swing the way of SAG, with the only real question remaining Emma Thompson. Minus Whittaker, I see Best Actor filling up exactly like this except with Redford grabbing the empty spot. Again, Daniel Bruhl grabs a nomination, both here and for Golden Globes, which makes a strong case for his entry into the nominations at the Oscars. I imagine “12 Years A Slave” takes Best Ensemble and gives it a huge lead over “Gravity” which is the exact opposite of an ensemble, making my case for Steve McQueen’s film to take Best Picture at the Academy Awards even stronger.
