2014 Oscars Challenge: [22] The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug – Three Nominations

TheHobbitTheDesolationOfSmaug-visualeffectsLast year, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” only received two nominations, one of which was for Best Visual Effects to which it lost to “Life Of Pi”, which also took home Best Directing for Ang Lee. This year, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” garners three nominations, losing the Best Makeup nomination from last year but picking up both Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing as well. The visuals in “The Desolation of Smaug” are phenomenal, bringing about huge downriver chases, enormous set pieces like the Lonely Mountain, Mirkwood, and Laketown, as well as the gargantuan star of the film, the dragon Smaug. The vastness and immensity of the film makes it a perfect candidate for a nomination in Best Visual Effects, but like last year, the competition is stiff and with a Best Picture favorite in the running as well, there’s little chance for “The Hobbit” sequel to grab the gold this year, with “Gravity” being the safe pick. Joe Letteri is the most notable nominee of “The Hobbit” crew, with four wins under his belt, two for “The Lord of the Rings” sequels, one for “King Kong” (2005), and one for “Avatar” (2009).

TheHobbitTheDesolationOfSmaug-soundeditingWith Benedict Cumberbatch lending his voice to the great and powerful Smaug, making a dragon have a realistic sound voice is not an easy achievement, but somehow the crew on “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” pull it off and create quite the cinematic adventure. Also, with action scenes involving arrows being launches and the meddling of Gandalf at Dol Guldur, with hundreds upon hundreds of Orcs, the film is no stranger to sound design and definitely provides some of the best of the year. But much like Best Visual Effects, they face off with technical juggernaut “Gravity”, which will likely be taking every technical achievement award in its path. For the editing crew, this is both of their first nomination while the mixing crew is very seasoned with many nominations under their belts, including wins for “Titanic” (1997), “Pearl Harbor” (2001), “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” (2003), and “King Kong” (2005).
