Oscars Watch: 2015 Online Film Critics Society Awards

The Online Film Critics go full “Mad Max: Fury Road,” giving George Miller Best Director along with Best Picture. Oscar Isaac gets on the board with Best Supporting Actor from “Ex Machina” which will likely not happen at the Oscars. Alicia Vikander, who was not honored here, will be lucky to get in for her “Ex Machina” role, as it does not feel on Academy’s radar. Michael Fassbender continues to prove his worth, getting another Best Actor win. And Blanchett and Mara rake in both Actress awards for their roles in “Carol.” Here’s what is working against “Mad Max: Fury Road” taking it all at the Academy Awards. For one, it will not be up for Best Screenplay, most likely, because there isn’t much of one. More often than not, whatever wins Best Picture also ends up winning Best Screenplay and Best Director. Many are predicting a split year this year (as is happening more frequently lately), with Miller winning Director but “Spotlight” winning Best Picture, which feels more likely. But I fully expect “Mad Max: Fury Road” to get nominated for Best Picture.
