When Leonardo DiCaprio’s character is mauled by a bear in “The Revenant,” his epic journey that follows is also a showcase of brilliant makeup and prosthetic design that is applied to DiCaprio’s body, showing the true scope of the attack in his limbs and on his skin. Along the way, we are shown various stages of recovery, as a Native American helps heal him in a makeshift teepee or during a bath where Leo’s body is basically a road map to the anguish he endured during his journey. Nonetheless, the makeup is what grounds the audience in believing the pain and turmoil of the characters. Without believable gashes and open wounds, scars, scrapes, and cuts, none of this would feel particular real.

What’s its competition? As with most categories, “Mad Max: Fury Road” is likely “The Revenant’s” biggest competition, again on the basis of sheer volume, as well as quality. Chances are taken in “Mad Max: Fury Road” that aren’t really emulated anywhere in “The Revenant.” But perhaps the authenticity of the wounds and effort put forth will be enough for it to steal a win.

Previous nominations? These are the first Academy Award nominations for Siân Grigg, Duncan Jarman and Robert Pandini.
