2016 Oscars Challenge: [5] “The Revenant” – Best Production Design

THE REVENANT
Jack Fisk (Production Design); Hamish Purdy (Set Decoration)

What can you say? The fort in the film, that was made by Jack Fisk, was made to be filmed 360 degrees without showing signs of construction. Instead of sound stages and sets, director Alejandro G. Iñárritu used actual wilderness, so location and the design of that location were key. The sets in the film are absolutely gorgeous with the pyramid of skulls remaining the most prominent in my mind. Everything from the guns that were carried, to the animals on set, to which part of the woods or rushing water were used, is all in the wheelhouse of the production designer. So although building sets on sound stages presents its own set of problems, you can only imagine what being out in the wilderness presents.

What’s its competition? That being said, “Mad Max: Fury Road” also sets most of its production in a desert, rather than sound stages. It brings huge elements of a post-apocalyptic civilization, along with vehicles of every different sort. So, as with most categories, “The Revenant” will have to overcome the quality and sheer volume present in “Mad Max: Fury Road.” But I do feel as though it’s theirs to lose.

Previous nominations? This is the first Academy Award nomination for Hamish Purdy. This is the second Academy Award nomination for Jack Fisk. He was previously nominated for:

  • THERE WILL BE BLOOD (2007)
    Nominee, Art Direction
