CAROL
Sandy Powell

Watching the featurette for Costume Design in “Carol,” as with the one from “The Revenant,” you really get a sense of what the thought process is for costume designers. Although Sandy Powell accredits most of the elements to Todd Haynes and producers, you also hear her describe finding Therese’s hat and it calling to her, even despite the fact that she wasn’t even looking for a hat, and apart from the Santa hat, Therese’s red and yellow hat was probably the most memorable article of clothing. For Carol herself, it was the scarves and the sunglasses that I’ll remember most, but you also hear Sandy describe the process of finding the right dresses for Carol as well. And the gloves, which are central to the story and the continuation of the relationship between the two women, becoming important as well. It’s interesting to note that Sandy Powell did the costume design for Todd Haynes’ “Far From Heaven” but was not nominated for that particular film that year, instead winning for Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs Of New York” (2002).

What’s its competition? Funny thing this year is costume design Sandy Powell is competing against herself and it turns out she’s actually her own main competition, with “Cinderella” being the film to beat with its extravagant dresses and touches at the fantasy elements. However, “Carol” is likely a close second, with the costumes actually elevating the characters more so than say in fellow period piece “The Danish Girl.” So either way, Sandy has a great chance of winning her fourth Oscar.

Previous nominations? Including her nomination this year for Costume Design for CINDERELLA, this is the twelfth Academy Award nomination for Sandy Powell. She was previously nominated for:
