88th Academy Award Winners

Listen, I can’t be mad because the same thing happened a few years ago when “12 Years A Slave” won having only won Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress, while “Gravity” had taken home 7 Oscars including Best Directing. So “The Revenant” wins Best Directing, Best Cinematography, and Best Leading Actor, yet does not pull off Best Picture. I do know which film I’ll remember in 10 years and it will not be “Spotlight” just like “Argo” still does not register as one of the best films of that year.

I do have to say this year’s Oscars was easily one of my favorite telecasts of all time, with Chris Rock nailing the opening monologue and with the response to the hashtag controversy this year being handled so perfectly. There were a few surprises like the Sylvester Stallone snub (although as it has been pointed out, no actor’s every won without a SAG nomination so I guess that statistic holds true), “Ex Machina” winning Best Visual Effects, which those that accepted admitted to not even expecting, and of course, “Spotlight” overcoming “The Revenant” with it’s late Oscar season surge and “The Big Short” with all the prerequisites it had knocked off the list on the way to the Oscars.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” winning 6 Oscars was a huge highlight and really made me wonder why George Miller and the film itself was not more heavily considered for their categories. With all the wins for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” last year and then the wins for “Mad Max: Fury Road” this year, I’m really enjoying the shift in honoring the truly unique visionaries at work in the industry today. The Lady Gaga performance of “Til It Happens To You” from the documentary “The Hunting Ground” and being joined by survivors of rape caused me to shed a few tears, but not more so when that song was snubbed for Best Original Song for the lame James Bond theme by Sam Smith. After that performance, I’m betting most Academy members wished they had voted differently. And having Dave Grohl perform for the In Memoriam was also a nice treat. Like I said, I can’t complain to much.
