Theatrical Releases: Independence Day: Resurgence & The Shallows

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE || June 24th, 2016

TheFastAndTheFurious15thAnniversary-poster THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: 15TH ANNIVERSARY || If you would have asked me 15 years ago if “The Fast and the Furious” would end up producing one of the biggest action film franchises, I would have been with everyone else in saying there was no way. Not that it wasn’t an enjoyable film, but to think that Vin Diesel would be carrying these films a decade and a half later is craziness, let alone that this film would be re-released in theaters for its anniversary. Kudos to Universal.
FreeStateOfJones-poster FREE STATE OF JONES || A friend at lunch pointed something out to me today. Not only are we not centered on an African American main character in this slave revolution film titled “Free State Of Jones,” but yet again the revolution is being led by a white man. Yes, I believe that white standing up for black rights is still important and maybe that’s where we lose sight, but this will hold nothing to say “The Birth Of A Nation,” which is written, directed, and starring a black man. Still, Matthew McConaughey is hard to pass up.

IndependenceDayResurgence-poster INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE || 2o years later, here we are with a sequel to one of the most memorable alien invasion films ever. I was nine years old when I saw the original in theaters and although I know I had to have seen plenty of movies before it, it is the one of the earliest films in theaters I remember most, especially in the sense that it’s the first film I remember actively wanting to see in theaters numerous times. The sequel sees Jeff Goldblum return along with several other key supporting cast (minus Will Smith unfortunately). But the new cast looks just as exceptional, with Liam Hemsworth and Maika Monroe looking to deliver some great turns.
THEATER
TheNeonDemon-poster THE NEON DEMON || Director Nicolas Winding Refn, best known for the masterpiece that is “Drive,” had a release since then, the 2013 Ryan Gosling picture “Only God Forgives,” which wasn’t very good. Visually, it’s neon drenched cinematography was enjoyable but overall it paled in comparison to “Drive.” The trailer for his latest, “The Neon Demon,” however, looks to be back to his heightened glory, delivering Elle Fanning in the life of a model, where sex and glitter look to be abundant supply.
THEATER
TheShallows-poster THE SHALLOWS || Blake Lively in a bikini for an entire movie? Where does one sign up? In “The Shallows,” Lively plays a surfer who finds herself in an exotic location when a vicious shark decides to make her its prey, stalking her and anyone that comes between them. With no way to contact any for help in this remote location and looking to constantly get hurt, she must navigate this combination of “Jaws” and “Open Water.”
