Box Office: September 16th, 2016 – Sully: Week #2

An under-performing Blair Witch leaves the box office wide open for Sully to take its 2nd weekend in a row. In fact, Bridget Jones’s Baby under-performed as well while Oliver Stone’s Snowden landed about as projected. Sully becomes the 14th film this year to take back-to-back weekends but with The Magnificent Seven and Storks coming out next weekend, Clint Eastwood’s latest feature will not be among the six other films that took home three weekends in a row. The only thing to move up on the charts this weekend was The Secret Life Of Pets which moved up a spot in its 11th weekend. Sausage Party and War Dogs both dropped a steep six spots, while The Disappointments Room dropped a staggering seven spots and will almost definitely fall off the charts next weekend.

Falling out of the Top 25 were Finding Dory (Pixar), which is at $483.9m domestically, Lights Out (WB), which is at $67m domestically, Ben-Hur (Par.), which is at a dismal $26m (to a $100m budget), and Southside With You (RdAttr.), which is at $6.1m and dropped a huge 13 spots. Completely off the charts is Morgan, which came out on September 2nd and was out of theaters by September 16th, for only a 2 week run. For all the marketing placed behind that film, it feels like a shame, as it only came in at $3,865,093 at an $8m budget. Ridley Scott’s son might have a hard time coming back from that.

Even with Lights Out bringing the studio’s film count down one, Warner Brothers remains #1 this week, as Sully out-performed everything on a huge level, with a whopping $12.1 million difference between Sully at No.1 and Blair Witch at No.2.
