Finding myself with a free moment today, I saw that some of my favorite 90s stars had birthdays today. It’s always fun to see how these actresses connect whether by what they star in, what their characters represent, or just small coincidences. For example, Neve Campbell and Lacey Chabert have both had recent birthdays and both starred on the television series Party Of Five together as main cast members. And this week, Cook’s best known role and Silverstone’s best known role are polar opposites, with Cook’s being a outcast turned homecoming queen while Silverstone’s is the bell of the ball from the start. And there’s a superhero connection between Silverstone and Benoist.
Rachael Leigh Cook (37)
From: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Favorite: She’s All That & Anti-Trust
Upcoming: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Rachael became a household name when she personified the ugly duckling turned swan in the Freddie Prinze Jr. teen movie She’s All That, where all that stood between her and the title of homecoming queen were scrunchies and glasses. She’d later star across from Ryan Phillippe in Anti-Trust and alongside Tara Reid in Josie and the Pussycats, but to me, she’ll always be nerdy girl turned hottie Laney Boggs. She is married with two children and hails from my home state of Minnesota.
Alicia Silverstone (40)
From: San Francisco, California
Favorite: Clueless, Batman & Robin, Aerosmith music videos
Upcoming: Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
Alicia ushered in an era of young woman that could not have been more relevant at the time and almost told the future of reality stars like Kim Kardashian and the like, as the airhead, spoiled high schooler Cher Horowitz in the film Clueless, as she navigated boys, clothes, and being the “it” girl. That movie became iconic and even though she never really topped it, she never really had to. She appeared as Batgirl in the worst Batman film in recent memory, Batman & Robin, and would later appear for a short stint in the ABC comedy Suburgatory. She now pops up in films and television sporadically, now playing lead in a TV Land series titled American Woman. She is married and has one boy, and also dabbles in writing, having created and marketed her own diet plan.
Melissa Benoist (28)
From: Houston, Texas
Upcoming: Supergirl TV Series
We go from Batgirl to Supergirl. Melissa is somewhat new to the acting world. The first thing I saw her in was as the casual love interest opposite Miles Teller in Whiplash, which was my favorite film of 2014. Leading up to that, she was apart of the Glee television series which I was not a viewer of and following Whiplash, she would be cast as Kara Zor-El for the television series Supergirl, which moved from CBS to CW, where she now crosses over into the other DC/CW superhero shows, including The Flash. I am very interested in starting Supergirl and even more interested in seeing where Melissa’s career takes her next, as I believe it has only just begun. She will be featured in Peter Berg’s upcoming Boston marathon bombing film Patriots Day later this year and Jennifer Morrison’s directorial debut Sun Dogs next year.
