ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY || Yesterday we got a look at the new Rogue One one sheet, which looks absolutely stunning, putting Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso front and center. The Caribbean-looking AT AT/Storm Trooper battle is still represented at the bottom, with the rest of the team filling in the middle. Vader’s face is blended in behind Jyn’s face and amongst the Death Star while Ben Mendelsohn‘s villain is staring off behind the crew. The black-blue-green sheen to the entire one sheet does make this feel like any other Star Wars film before and also gives off the sense of an updated version of something Drew Struzan might do for the film.
Then today, we received the 2nd trailer, featuring a more in-depth set up to Jyn Erso’s story and in particular that of her father, played by Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal). As most have suspected, he’s behind the Death Star in some way, after being taken by Mendelsohn’s character and Jyn sets out to try and stop him, with the help of her crew. Forest Whittaker looks to be the all-knowing Jedi in the picture, taking over what feels like a “Yoda” role while Alan Tudyk brings the voice of the bot that will fill in for the absence of C3PO. We get another small glimpse of Darth Vader, this time appearing in a rush from a cloud of smoke, to which nightmares are definitely made of. Needless to say, the character development is in full force (no pun intended) with the trailer already getting me excited to meet these people. Not just Jyn, as I know Felicity Jones will undoubtedly knock this role out of the park, but I’m excited for Diego Luna’s Captain Cassian Andor character, as he leads Jyn towards her father, and I’m especially excited for Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe character, who is a blind, spiritual warrior-monk.
If it lives up to the standards that this marketing campaign has set for it, Rogue One will almost certainly be my favorite film of the year, hands down. Only two more months to go.
