New Trailer: Detroit – Official Trailer #1

DETROIT || Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty) takes on the subject of the 12th Street Riots that took place in Detroit in 1967, particularly something known as The Algiers Motel Incident, where three black when were killed and nine others (including some white women) were brutally beaten during a police raid that was set off by what was supposed to be a joke among friends. John Boyega stars as a police officer patrolling the neighborhood during the raid, while Will Poulter, Anthony Mackie, and John Krasinski also star. Bigelow is definitely a director on the Academy’s radar, so if the film can last through a summer release, it could easily have some Oscar potential, just from seeing the trailer alone. It’s timely, especially following an Academy year where several nominated documentaries took on the subject of the black race being treated unfairly, and is also being released on the 50th anniversary of the event.
