COCO || Disney + Pixar’s first full length trailer for their upcoming film Coco isn’t the most eloquent or subtle, as it uses voice-over to literally spell out exactly what it’s about. “Once every year, our ancestors come back to our world… to see family and friends. But no living person has ever visited their world…. until now.” Thus setting up the young boy who, by playing an old guitar in a mortuary, is sent to the land of the dead where he meets his family and they must get him back to the other side. My biggest complaint with the trailer is that, with such Spanish/Mexican themes, the voice-over artist of choice does not sound of the same culture. Had his voice fit the tone more, it would have tied the trailer together better, but itself it feels very old-school-Disney in the worst of ways. And at a run-time of 1:28, this still very much feels like a teaser, which is not a complaint, as I believe more should always be left to the imagination, but how many teasers do you really need? The first teaser did a fine job of telling us the basic plot of the film and now they’ve simply added that he meets his deceased family on the other side and they must smuggle him out.
