Echoing the British Independent Film Awards, the Atlanta Film Critics Circle gives their Best Film Award to “The Favorite,” making that the fourth different film awarded the top honor for four different American voting groups, proving the Best Picture landscape this season is fairly wide open. “The Favourite” doesn’t stop there, as it took Best Ensemble and Best Screenplay, while Olivia Colman and Emma Stone took Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, Stone breaking Regina King’s streak in that respective category. Alfonso Cuarón grabs three more for “Roma,” winning Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Cinematography, making it apparent that he could definitely take nominations in those categories when the Oscar nominations come in. Ethan Hawke wins his third Critics Award for Best Actor, representing “First Reformed,” now with awards from the New York Films Critics Circle and the Detroit Film Critics Society. Sam Elliott adds another award to his mantle as well, for his supporting role in “A Star Is Born.” Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper missed out on the main awards, but grabbed the AFCC Breakthrough Awards in their respective categories (Breakthrough Performance and Best First Film) with Gaga sharing his award with Elsie Fisher of “Eighth Grade.” On the board with their first wins were “Isle Of Dog” for Best Animated Film and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” for Best Documentary Film, both of which will likely have many more wins ahead and will surprise if not included in Oscar nominations. “First Man” also appears for the first time, with Justin Hurwitz grabbing a win for Best Original Score. If “First Man” get completely shut out by the Academy, I could see Hurwitz sneaking in a nomination for his work, if absolutely nothing else.
