This is Spike Lee’s first directing nomination and, if he wins, he will be the first African American director to win the gold in the category. His biggest competition is Alfonso Cuarón, who, although has won the directing award before, has the higher profile film.

ADAM DRIVER

CHARACTER SYNOPSIS: As Flip Zimmerman, Adam Driver portrays a Jewish cop who teams with an African-American officer to infiltrate and expose the local chapter of the KKK.

Although I preferred his performance over most, Mahershala Ali and Richard E. Grant are the front-runners. Sam Elliott could also be due.
